Ivan Buffa – conductor
Slovak composer, pianist, conductor and pedagogue, one of the youngest representatives of Slovak concert art.
At first he studied piano at the Conservatory in Kosice (O.Reiprich and P.Kascak) and then composition (Josef Podprocky). After finishing these studies he was further educated at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in the class of D.Schermann, M.Kopelent and M.Jarrell, where he found himself in one of the most important cultural centers. He was educated, in paralell, at the University of Performing Arts in Bratislava in the piano class of I.Gajan, later M.Lapsansky and M.Stefka.
He also studied the composition in the class of Vladimir Bokes. He rounded out his studies with the PHD study at the University of performing arts.
He has participated in many international composers and master classes in Cesky Krumlov (H.Oehring, L.Toressen, M.Kopelent), in Austrian Reichenau (Gy.Fekete) – 2nd Composition Award for String Quartet, an interpreter course in Vienna (Gy.Kurtag) and German Walderbach (Elena Nesterenko).
Since 2002 he has been performing in piano duo together with his wife, Diana, closely cooperating with the Austrian soprano Petra Chiba (inter alia also champion competition of Lucia Popp in 1996 in Bratislava), since 2005 with the Austrian Ensemble for contemporary music – Ensemble Lux, whose members they have been since 2005 and with whom he performed at festivals such as Wien Modern and the Bregenzer Festspiele.
In 2008 he founded, together with the leading young Slovak musicians Quasars Ensemble, with which, as its artistic director and conductor presented at many concerts and festivals in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania.
As a pianist he performed also at many other concerts, competitions and festivals at home and abroad (Forfest, Bratislava Music Festival, Melos-Ethos, New Slovak Music, Orpheus, Convergence, Evenings of New Music, Festival of Contemporary Art in Kosice, concerts Austrian Society for Contemporary Music).
During the Aspekte Salzburg Festival the compound Ritual was performed by the Slovak Sinfonietta of Zilina. It was custom-composed and the Musical Fond awarded him with the Awars of Ladislav Bella in 2007. In the same year the editorship Hevhetia presented his profile CD “New slovak music for piano”, which he recorded together with Diana Buffa.
The composing, conducting and piano activities have been influencing each other, which is reflected in his personal and individual approach while studying the score of every work of art. As an interpreter he adhibited decades of Slovak and foreing authors’ works of art. He is well known and coveted player of various style orientations. His pieces of art were presented in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Czech Republic or Poland.
Since 2008 he has been the pedagogue of compositions and theoretical subjects at the Uiversity of Performing Arts in Bratislava. The same year he founded the Quasars Ensemble.
